Tirthanagari/Pilgrimage Centre: Triveni Ghat of Rishikesh is said to be Triveni, that there is a confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. But in the absence of publicity, this place has become a Ganga Ghat for the common man and the devotees coming from outside.
Everyday Ganga Aarti takes place on the Triveni Ghat. Thousands of people come to see the combustion of the effigy of Ravan, Meghnath and Kumbhakarna, symbolizing the victory of Dharma on the wrongdoing (adharma) here in the Dussehra fair. On the occasion of Basant Panchami, the bath of Lord Bharat ji Maharaj is brought here and there is a bath. The devotees coming out from outside here keep the tension of the devotees throughout the year. Besides, god dolls from the mountainous region are also brought here for bathing.
In Kumbh and Mahakumbh, there are thousands of pilgrims diving to come from Garhwal Mandal in addition to the city and surrounding areas. Diping is also considered to be a special virtue on the main bathing festival. According to educationist Vanshidhar Pokhariyal, there is a confluence of Pavan River Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati in Triveni Ghat. That is why this place was named Triveni. From the Himalayan region of the Ganga, the Ganga comes in the Rishikesh and moves towards the ground. On the banks of this Yamuna is the Kunda, which is also known as Sage Kund which is called Suryakunda. Now that people call Saraswati Nalla, there is a direct form of Saraswati.
On this coast of Ganga, Ramayya Rishi used to do penance. According to the scriptures, Lord Narayana had given a vision to the sage in the form of a humble cast of humble flesh. The ancient name of this city is Kubjamark. Hrishikesh Narayan is the land of Lord Bharata, hence its name was Hrishikesh and later Rishikesh.
This land of so great importance is recorded on the tourism map as just a ghat. In all the literature and documents of the tourism department, there is no mention of the significance of the three rivers anywhere.
In the Yamuna Kunda, the Sun God had given Darshan
Rishi Kund, which is located near the Triveni Ghat, is also the result of the asceticness of a sage. According to the scriptures and beliefs, the Saint Galiiva worshiped and praised Lord Sun God here. Lord Sun appeared here and he here appeared to Yamuna Ji forever. Yamuna’s source is located here. The water of this pool always remains with one color and coolness. Its water is never flabby in any season. Any time around the buildings are constructed, the source of the Yamuna breaks from a few meters down.
Triveni’s attempt was taken 23 years ago
The Kumbh Mela administration, in the Kumbha, that year, 23 years ago, had tried to show the name of the Triveni of Triveni Ghat. The then Kumbh Melchikar PK Mohanty took the idol of Yamuna Ji from the Kumbh Mela budget near the parking lot and constructed a beautiful trunk here. In addition to taping the streams of Saraswati, Jamuna and Ganga, there was a joint stream for the devotees’ visit to the place of worship. If the local administration and tourism department of Rishikesh preserved this effort of the fair administration and branding them according to its importance then today the form of Triveni would have been much more flourished. Later, the statue of Yamuna and the site became a victim of encroachment. The clash of joint confluence was buried in the rubble.
Mayor Anita Mamgain says that Triveni and Triveni Ghat have identified the heart of the shrine. For this, adequate facilities are provided for the devotees. It is really necessary to develop Triveni according to his name and propagate it according to its importance. There will be meaningful initiatives in this direction.
